ABOUT US

Saylor is a 15,625 s.f. indoor facility for skateboarding, inline skating, and BMX.  We’re open Tuesday - Sunday.  Check sessions & fees below to see hours, costs, and who rides on what days.  We change our hours once in a while, so you might want to check here before making the trip.

Our fully-stocked skate shop has everything you need for skateboarding.  We offer a small selection of BMX stuff, too.  If there’s something you need that we don’t stock, we can get it for you.  Hey, you get a free session when you buy a complete!

Pizza, pop, and snacks are available in our concession area.

There are two private party/meeting rooms you can reserve for your birthday or other event.  We can even cater it for you.

We offer lessons, camps, and clinics throughout the year.  We throw occasional contests and all-nighters.  Info about special events is included on the web site and at myspace.com/saylorskatepark.  You can sign up for our email newsletter if you want advance notice about what’s coming up.

The second floor mezzanine offers spectators a great view for watching friends and family use the park.

If you’re new to the park, please read the waiver section for important information about how to get your waiver filled out.

Helmets are required.  (Yeah, we hear ya groaning.)  We sell them and rent them.  Pads are optional.

WAIVERS & WAIVER REQUIREMENTS

YO!  PLEASE READ!  IMPORTANT!  Waivers are required for all participants.  If you’re new to the park and under age 18, your parent or LEGAL guardian has to sign your waiver IN PERSON AT THE PARK.  If that isn’t possible, you can download the waiver and have your parent or LEGAL guardian GET IT NOTARIZED, otherwise YOU CAN’T RIDE.  Getting it notarized is easy.  Print the waiver and have your parent take it to the bank.  A notary there will witness their signature and stamp the waiver, then you bring the notarized waiver with you to the park.  If you’re new to the park and are 18 or older, you’ll need to show your ID, then you can sign your own waiver.  Questions about any of this?  Call 515-289-0303.  To download the waiver, read all of the above first, then click here.

RIDER INFO

Please read the waiver section before you come to the park.  If you’re new to the park and under 18, there’s stuff you have to do in order to ride.

Our insurance company requires helmets on all participants.  We rent them and sell them.

Bikers, we’ve always been a no-peg park, however, we now allow ONLY plastic or plastic-sleeved pegs with rounded plugs.  We’re doing this on a trial basis.  So far, so good.  Bar ends are required.  We stock a few if you need them.

PARENT INFO

Skaters and bikers must be at least age 7.  We can give skateboarding lessons to kids age 6, but they can’t participate in regular sessions until they are 7.  Kids under age 10 must have their own adult in the building at all times.  Kids age 10 and older can be dropped off at the park.

Only a participant’s own parent or legal guardian can sign their waiver.  If you’re bringing someone else’s kids to the park, be sure the kids have notarized waivers with them.  See waiver section for more info.

We can accept faxed waivers as long as they are notarized.  Our fax number is 515-289-4508.  Give us a call and let us know the fax is on its way.

We do not rent skateboards, but we sell everything you need to skate.

Questions about anything?  515-289-0303.

DIRECTIONS

From 1-80, take the NE 14th street exit and go north about 2 miles.  You’ll pass Woodside Middle School and the county sheriff’s office.  There is a small hotel, then a church on the east side of NE 14th.  Just after the church turn right (east) on the road that has no sign.  We’re the second building on the north.

From I-235, take the Corporate Woods Drive exit and go west about 2 miles.  Turn left (south) at the intersection of Corporate Woods Drive (aka 66th Street ) and NE14th Street (aka Highway 69),  then go about ¼ mile.  Adams Door Company will be on the left.  Turn left just after Adams Door.  We’re directly behind (east of) them.

BLOG

January 1, 2009 - Whaaaat?  2009?  Hard to believe for so many reasons.  2008 was a rough year, for sure.  Things changed, as they always do, and some good friends were lost along the way.  But for every difficult loss there was an important gain – new insight, new perspective, new customers and new friends.  Lessons were learned, some painful, all valuable.  Now on to other things…

The park has been open for two years and four months – almost as long as it took to take it from idea to reality (two years and ten months!). Still, every day is an adventure, the best part being the opportunity to meet, and in many cases, get to know you, the customers.  The second best part has been watching your talent develop.  This would be happening without Saylor, of course, but maybe not at quite the same rate.  There are some really amazing skaters and bikers in Iowa, and you just keep getting better!

Something very cool deserves mention here.  It involves our regular skater and biker communities.  It’s indescribably awesome how you guys have figured out how to ride together in peace under one roof in a relatively small space.  The coolest things are the friendships that have formed between some of the skaters and bikers and the respect you show for each other when someone does a really good trick.  I don’t think it’s that way everywhere; at least that’s what I’m told.  So props to all of you for being the great people you are and for making Saylor such a fun place to work!

So what will 2009 bring?  Who knows?!  With your continued support, we should be around for years to come.  So thank you.  Have a great 2009.  Come and ride.  Good times…

May 22, 2008 - The new ramp, dubbed "the whale" is almost done.  It got its name from its monstrous size and its surprising resemblance to a certain killer marine mammal.  Dirtball and Georgie skated it the other night and pronounced it totally sick.  The whale is the brainchild of our own Mike Worley.  How's that for a little glimpse into how Mikes' mind works?  Scary...

The War of the Ams contest series is on hold for now.  We're not sure what happened with it, but no harm done, since it wasn't scheduled to start until October.

Making plans for the summer?  Mark your calendar for the July 26 Free Flow comp at Saylor.  Free Flow will be posting online registration a week or two prior to the event on their web site www.freeflowtour.com.  You'll need to get a waiver from them and get it notarized, and if you don't already have one on file with us, you'll need to do the same thing with our waiver (unless your parent signs it in our presence at the skatepark).

Free Flow details are slowly coming together.  In the 12 & under Junior Jam, five skaters at a time will compete in jams of 4-5 minutes.  The top one or two skaters will move onto semifinal heats and winners of those will advance to the Junior finals.  Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers.  The format for the 18 & unders will be 5-8 skaters at a time in jams of 4-7 minutes.  The top 2 from each heat will advance to semifinal heats.  The top skaters in the semifinals advance to the finals.  Prizes will be award to the top three, with the first place winner going on to compete in the AST Dew Tour Toyota Challenge in Salt Lake City on September 11-14, 2008.  Winner of that goes on to Orlando to compete with the pros on the Dew Tour.

We think we have a pro skater coming to judge the Free Flow comp.  More on that later...

April 28, 2008 - Well, Top Shop 2008 is over and Saylor finished 15th out of 40 teams.  Amazing.  Actually, not amazing.  Our regular team members, Mike, Georgie, Dirtball and Marcus, were joined by Donnie Bandy and Chad Lopez.  Mike didn't end up skating, so Chad took his spot.  Anyway, all are strong skaters individually, but put them together and you get a pretty capable team.  Huge thanks to Donnie and Chad for reppin' the park for this event.  And Georgie?  Many of us watched Georgie skate virtually every single day this winter, often with more than his usual focus (the name of his shop... Coincidence?) and intensity.  Well, Georgie placed 11th out of 200 skateboarders at Top Shop.  Way to go, Georgie!
